As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,528 people, 672 households, and 417 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,534.8 people per square mile (590.0/km²). There were 729 housing units at an average density of 732.3 per square mile (281.5/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.23% White, 0.52% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.33% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.24% of the population.
There were 672 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the borough the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
